National Parks directly adjacent to Estate The Heezeberg
Nationaal Park Drents-Friese Wold (1 km)
Immediately adjacent to the Forest Holiday Cottages of Landgoed De Heezeberg, the National Park Drents-Friese Wold is situated. The park is one of the largest contiguous nature reserves in the Netherlands. In 2000, more than 6000 hectares of forest, heathland, drift sand and stream valley grasslands were designated as National Park. The Drents-Friese Wold is one of the most beautiful and most important nature reserves in Europe and is therefore designated as Natura2000 area. You can traverse this wilderness in every possible way: on horseback, on foot or by bike.
Tip from the locals: Deep in the woods of the Drents-Friese Wold lies the Onderduikershol Diever, which can be found via walking and cycling paths between Wapse and Diever. During the Second World War, a group of resistance fighters from Diever conceived the plan to build a hiding place in an inconspicuous sand hill in the pine forest. The thrusting team dug the hill, built a hollow of the pine logs and repaired the sand hill in the old form. After a few months of hard work, the shelter was ready and the resistance men disappeared underground. Sometimes twenty illegal immigrants were hidden in the den. The memorial at the den reminds the resistance men who were killed by betrayal.
Nationaal Park Dwingelderveld (8 km)
National Park Dwingelderveld is located only a few miles from the nature holiday homes of Estate The Heezeberg. It is best known for the large, quiet heath where you can wander and unwind. During a walk, under beautiful cloudy skies, you have a chance to meet with the sheep herd of Ruinen and various butterflies, birds and insects. Every season has its own colors. In the spring you see white seas of peat puff, in the summer the heather is endless purple and in autumn the grasses give the area an orange-yellow glow. Sometimes you meet the shepherd with his sheep and dog. Then it is as if you are going back in time.
Tip from the locals: Bospub de Boerdennen is a beautiful pub with amphitheater and mini golf in the National Park. Look out your eyes in this forest pub. You can enjoy the tastiest artisan pancakes here, as well as a tasty sandwich, daily special, salad or apple pie with coffee. There are also covered wagon trips. Every first Sunday of the month live Irish music from 14:00 to 17:00. Every last Sunday of the month a nice walk in the National Park at 16:00 and from 17:00 live music.
